The Muppets (2011)

comments
Director: James Bobin
Runtime: 98 minutes
Writers: Jason Segel, Nicholas Stoller
Cast: The Muppets, Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones.
Plot: When 3 muppet fans learn that Tex Richman wants to drill under the muppet theater for oil Gary, Mary and Walter set out to find the muppets who have been split up for years Kermit lives in his own mansion depressed in Hollywood, Gonzo is a high class plumber at Gonzo's Royal Flush, Fozzie performs with a tribute band called The Moopets , Miss Piggy is the plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, and Animal is at a celebrity anger management rehab center in Santa Barbara.

The scepticism that many Muppets fans had about this movie are now mostly vanished. As a Muppet fan I was excited to get to watch the muppets do their 3rd best gift to us: Laughter,  and of course I was excited about this movie. I'll try to do this review as spoiler free as possible but I will be quoting some of the lines on the movie.

It's the same plot of all the Muppet movies, except this time it's something else too.
If you've seen several movies of the Muppets you know what I'm talking about. Some rich bad man or woman wants to take over the Muppet Theather and destroy the Muppets and then they are obligated to put on a show to save their home. This movie even references this in the unique magic of the Muppets. Segel changed things a bit to make it a movie that can bring spirit even on the most darkest days.
The movie starts with Walter and his "brother" Gary from when they were kids until they grew up, passing through the very important moment when they first watched The Muppet Show on TV. The place where they live is a normal Utopian little city called Smalltown and everything is bright and everything is good. The change of place makes the movie ground us to Earth again when they have a walk by Los Angeles, certainly the part where they see the old Muppet Theather didn't helped at all. And seeing a heart-broken Kermit with no hopes of getting their theather back isn't helpful either. But little Walter believes in them and is what we can say really the #1 fan of The Muppets. But the movie is not sad at all, all the opposite it is even more funnier, when they bring back the gang in a montage and finding a celebrity host in Jack Black that will help them do their show.
All the Muppet Theleton show is what I can say the funniest part since it remembers us to those great days of The Muppet Show, just like nothing really changed. Seems like the original name for this movie, The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time!!!, could really go well with this movie.

Wait, wait. Stop. Are there humans in this movie?
Again another quote, this time said only in the trailer. If you are planning to see this movie only for the human actors then you got the wrong movie. Everyone knows a Muppets movie is about the Muppets, and this one surely is. If you thought Amy Adams and Jason Segel had a lot of airtime think again. Yes they did, but not overshadowing anyone. This movie is about the Muppets. It's about Kermit and Gonzo and Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy and all the gang. But even so the human part of this movie could be said that is also great. With a ton of cameos of celebrities and some singing parts from Adams, Segel and Cooper they still can't overshadow the Muppets but bring us a good movie overall. That said Cooper was really a good villain, seems like he was born to do these roles. Maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh. And the chemistry between Adams and Segel is great and they seem like one of those happy naive couples that we don't get to see often on cinema. And let's not forget Rashida Jones as the only TV executive that gives the muppets a chance to do the telethon.

The Sensational, Muppetational Songs
Bret McKenzie wrote the very silly but lovable songs on this movie and I loved all of them. Yes, we have some of the original ones and also some of them taken from other singers and sang by the muppets (because honestly when would you see chickens singing "Forget You" or a Muppet Quartet singing "Smells like teen spirit") and that's where Christophe Beck comes into. The Soundtrack of this movie is spirited and ridiculously great and I expect at least an Oscar nomination for McKenzie for best song, if not everyone is crazy.

Don't judge a movie by its trailer
Even with all the trailers that we had for this movie, even the parody ones, much of what is shown on the trailers (even some other celebrity cameos) were cut from the movie at the end, but nevertheless the movie is still fantastical. I believe that this movie is what we need in this times. Inspiring movies like this, which strongly pushes us to believe in ourselves, is what we need. Somewhere somehow I know Jim Henson is smiling and being proud of what Segel and company did. I wish I could write more about this film but I really don't want to ruin it for everybody else.

So go watch The Muppets! You will honestly have a good time and if you're a fan you will love it!

This are some movies that I had seen for the first time in the past months but are not new cinema releases, they either are from dvds or tv. Some are old and some others are new and several are just random movies I've watched.

The Legend of 1900 (1998)                      4/5
Wonderful movie with a sense of European cinema and lovely soundtrack, composed by Ennio Morricone. Tim Roth does a great job as the piano man called simply 1900 who lives forever in a ship, but even if the story is good the cinematography is excellent, its just a good looking movie.

You Again (2010)                                    2/5
They could have done something so much better with this great women cast but sadly it is predictable and a bit boring and the few laughs you get them from Betty White, who is a show stealer wherever she appears, but overall not a good movie. They used great actresses, even counting Kristen Bell, and for nothing.

Roxanne (1987)                                       5/5
Hilarious adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. Steve Martin makes us laugh big and at the same time fall in love. It has witty jokes and colorful characters and a romantic story that will show you that looks are not important when it comes to love. One of the best movies I've seen of Steve Martin.

I am Number Four (2011)                      3.5/5
Enjoyable movie. Actually this stuff is not like Twillight cause first of all it is packed with action and the love story isn't as melodramatic. It's a teen movie for teens and the fights are spectacularly done a la Michael Bay, who produced the movie, it's a bit cheesy but when the action begins it's packed with fun stuff. And may I say what a hottie Timothy Olyphant is?

It could happen to you (1994)                  4/5
Ah the romantic comedies of the 80s and 90s. Weren't them good? This one is lovely and features Nicolas Cage (back in his good days) and Bridget Fonda involved in a movie where you dont need to be rich or poor if you have love and if you are good to other people you can get back what you lose. It just seems that Cage had good chemistry with everyone back in the days.

NOTE> If you click the title of the movie it'll send you to it's IMDB page so you get to know about what is the movie and who stars on it.

And this is an opportunity to also vote on the new poll at the side like always! So The Avengers is shooting right now at Cleveland and I thought an idea to maybe give a little support to the bad guys for once in their lives, just vote who do you think from the Marvel movies is your favorite bad guy. NOTE> Magneto is only posted once but Im counting both Sir Ian and Fassbender's performance, even if he wasnt the bad bad guy. Im also counting Kevin Bacon's Sebastian Shaw as a villian cause he had a lot to do with the plot and Venom I didn't knew if I put it under Topher Grace so I did anyway.

Movies: X-men: First Class (2011)

comments

Director: Matthew Vaughn
Runtime:  132 minutes
Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Nicholas Hoult, Lucas Till and Zoe Kravitz.
Plot: Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new); to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN.

My first ever 5 star review and it’s excellent, the movie of course. Let me tell you that at first it sounded like a good idea to do a prequel of the saga but somehow I wasn’t that much interested in this movie. It just seemed that some CGI effects weren’t easy on the eyes at first. (When you first see Beast as Beast is not easy either but you get used to it, because the movie is sooo good)

The Characters
What makes a difference between this movie and the originals is that is has character depth in big like in some small characters. The most deep character was Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto. Michael Fassbender excelled as Erik and gave one of the best performances of the movie as a total badass but with a heart, and that makes him seem relatable in some sort of way. Charles and Erik’s relationship is more profound than in other movies (obviously cause they seemed to focus more on Wolverine on the others) but it is a relationship that is relatable and charming. Another role that impressed me much was Raven aka Mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Mystique is fresh and young and fun but also wants to be herself, who she really is and wants to be accepted. The other mutants have funny bits and specially when training. Charles Xavier was pretty much good but I think that Erik overshadowed him a bit, James McAvoy definitely did a good job and the last scenes are proof of that. Kevin Bacon was surprisingly good, haven’t seen him in a good movie in years, and may I just say that he kinda spoke like 5 languages on this movie, nah kidding he just spoke 3, I think.

The Settings
Even though the movie was filmed only in UK and the US, the movie settings are in US, UK, Russia and an island that seems to be Cuba or close to it. The setting was great and being set in the early 60s the writers had time to play with the historical and political events at that time. Personally I love the movies that are set in the 60s because they have this style that is true of those days and this film does achieve a good setting.

Mutant and proud
Now about the movie, overall the X-men saga’s movies have always been about accepting and this is not untouched in this movie. The little mutants (Charles and Erik’s team) feel like segregated kids and when they find other people like them they feel comfortable like at home. Mystique is a way to improve this theme here. At the end they are accepting who they are and being proud of it or as Mystique would say: “Mutant and proud”.

So this was longer than I thought but X-men: First Class is just worth your time. It is very long but it doesn’t drag, it will not make you dull and will maintain you excited in every minute. So go enjoy it now, and here I leave you with the X-men: First Class trailer. Hope you enjoyed.
